Glorious coiled snake bangle bracelet crafted in silver with niello details. This guy, nicknamed Albie in our office, coiled fully around the wrist or arm twice. Albie's head is detailed with niello eyes and cross-hatched scale detail. Nearly one full coil is decorated with a ship and farming scene. The rest of this snake is adorned with the same cross-hatch detail meant to look like scales.
Snakes, long popular in jewellery for their symbolism of everlasting and eternal love, experienced another revival in the early 1920s with the discovery King Tutankhamen's tomb. Upper arm bangles became popular again during this time period, following the discovery and new interest in Egypt and the clothing and fashions of the Egyptian peoples. This piece dates to around that time, early 1920s - early 1940s.
Not marked, tested as 900 silver.
Measures approx 20.7 cm / 8.25 inches interior circumference and approx 3.5 cm / 1.4 inches wide when worn, head to tail. This is a larger sized bangle, I'd wear it in a stack, above my watch or other bracelets though it was probably originally designed as an upper arm bangle.
Weighs 46 grams.
