Victorian trombone link sterling silver chain. This chain is really wonderful! Elongated trombone style links alternate with a shorter love knot design link. The substantial oval links are made from 1.65 mm silver wire. This is a classic style, lovers knots with oblong links. Each end of the chain terminates at a large dog clip clasp, these do not swivel. These clasps can be worn to the back, making it a classic chain, or to the front, to display a pendant or locket. Circa late 19th century, Victorian era, British in origin.
This chain has a very cool feature. The t-bar is free to slide along it's length and is removable. It cannot come off on it's own, the bulbous ends of the dog clips are slightly too large. To remove it, slide it to one end and when the gate of the dog clip starts to push in with the pressure, let it, so that the jump ring end is on the dog clip. Then open the dog clip so that it can come off. Do in reverse to get the t-bar back on the chain.
In excellent condition. The dog clips are springy and all the hallmarks match.
Hallmarked for sterling silver in various spots. The dog clips, and jump ring of the t-bar have matching date letters for Birmingham 1886. There is a maker's mark on the t-bar, one of the links, and the dog clips, all are H.A & S. There are lion mark for sterling on the links. Professionally tested and assessed as sterling silver throughout.
Measures 43.5 cm / 17 inches end to end, oblong links are approx 5.9 mm wide by 24.7 mm long.
Weighs 35.2 grams.
