Stunning pair of antique Victorian period French diamond earrings. These earrings are made in dormeuse style, or sleeper style. They were meant to be comfortable to sleep in, though I'm not recommending that myself! The ear wires are a bright rosy 18 carat yellow gold and curve around to a platinum set, bezel set, rose cut diamond. The smaller rose cut diamond accents the larger old European cut diamond beneath it. Each old European cut diamond is set in platinum claws which flare out in a buttercup style. The buttercups have a larger base than top with curved inside edges which can be seen from the front. This is to reflect light back to the viewer and make the diamonds appear larger.

The sides of the diamond settings are pierced into a beautiful, classic and open style. A rose gold base lines the bottom edge of the larger diamond and has the hinge mechanism attached. These earrings fasten with a little click and the edges of the fastener are curved so that it's simple to hook the end of your finger in and open them. These earrings have a hand engraved number on each one, 10861. We don't know what this number means but it wasn't uncommon to have a catalogue number on pieces so it may be that. This a lovely, quality piece.
