SOLD. Sorry, this item has sold.

Large Victorian sterling silver foliate locket. This oversized locket is engraved with a floral design on a raised section with pairs of ivy leaves in a fan design above and below that. Between the ivy leaves is an engraved rope design. Filled with Victorian symbolism, I think the centre flowers are cornflowers to symbolism gentleness, ivy leafs symbolising everlasting love, and rope meaning an unbreakable bond. A large bail, a teardrop shape typical of the Victorian era, would allow a significant chain, such as a book chain, to work with this locket. Circa 1880s - 1900, British in origin.

In good condition, there are minor dents throughout. These are hidden within the pattern at normal viewing distances. This is a large locket, please press on the edge rather than centre to close it as pressing in the centre chances denting it. It closes firmly with a snap and has a wonderful highly patterned front. There are no frames or photo covering.

Hallmarked for sterling silver, date letter worn and illegible.

Measures approx 55.3 mm / 2.2 inches tall not including the bail, 69 mm / 2.7 inches tall including the bail, by 41 mm / 1.6 inches wide, by 14.1 mm / 0.55 inches deep.

Weighs 18.1 grams.
