Georgian 15 carat gold fob with an engraved citrine set into the base. How very meaningful this large fob is! The base, set with a rectangular shaped bright yellow citrine, is carved with a leaf around which are the words "JE NE CHANGE QU'EN MOURANT" or I only change when I die. The leaf is likely an elm leaf which is associated with death. In typical Georgian design, the top of the seal is shaped into a pattern of ridged, clean lines with a tapered shape giving them a shell look. The handle is classically styled as an urn. The themes of death and mourning, very much typical during the 19th century, run deep in this seal, pulling together the entire piece while the citrine, meant to bring good fortune, keeps us just on the right side of the macabre. Circa early to mid 19th century.
In excellent condition with only very minor sign of wear and age.
Not marked, professionally tested and assessed as 15 carat gold. The gold is slightly more rose in colour.
Measures approx 30.8 mm / 1.2 inches tall with the base measuring 19.4 mm / 0.76 inches by 17.7 mm / 0.70 inches.
Weighs 9.5 grams. This is quite a chunky, heavy seal.
