This is a great French silver long guard chain dating to the late 1800s. This long linked chain features flat oblong links which are decorated with a hammered design. At the end of the chain is a spring fastener.

This type of chain was used to attach lorgnette or a tassel or decoration for a sautoir. The spring clasp on the end of of medium size and is slightly stiff but closes securely. I love to wear this type of chain! It can be worn a huge variety of ways from a simple double or triple strand to varying lengths with charms, watches, tassels, lorgnettes, or other keepsakes on the spring clasp. Circa 1890s - 1910s.

Hallmarked with a boar's head, the French hallmark for 800 - 900 silver. This chain also tested as such. The modern standard is 925 parts of 1000.

Measures approx 71 cm / 28 inches doubled which is about 142 cm / 56 inches if the chain could be opened.

Weighs 12.2 grams.
